P04 → Film Booklet for ‘RAN’

My second semester of my first year graphic design course at university was all about typograpy. The aim of our project, was to create a booklet about one of two films given to us by our tutuors. Either film had a set amount of text that had to be layed out into booklet form. The purpose of the booklet, was to fit in with a hypothetical limited edition DVD of the chosen film.

I chose to create my booklet for Akira Kurosawa’s imfamous 1985 film ‘RAN’. The concept of the booklet’s design derives from illustration styles that were prominent in 16th century Japan, the time period and country the film was set in. Using the styles as inspiration, I then modernised the style and created custom character illustrations for the main roles in the film. I very much enjoyed this editorial and typography based semester, and I hope to do some more work like this in the future.
